Besson Vineyard Grenache 2014

A Tribute to Grace
Besson Vineyard Grenache

We love this because...

This might only be Angela’s second vintage from Besson but it is 104th from the vineyard which was planted in 1910 and is a truly unique site. The resulting wine has an exceptional combination of high-toned floral violet notes and deep red cherry fruit – incredibly expressive now but really age worthy as well.

The wine

We’ve got to start here with the vineyard which was planted back in 1910 and remains run to this day by the Besson family, currently in the form of George Besson Jr. who is the third generation to have undertaken the custodianship of these vines. Located on the winding Hecker Pass just outside of the Santa Cruz mountains the plantings are all head trained (bush/goblet) and at 105 years old resemble small trees; until the current drought they were completely dry-farmed but spot irrigation is now being used to ensure their health.

The 2014 was made using 50% whole cluster ferments with native yeasts working their magic on the grapes over the course of a 16 day ferment. After pressing the elevage for this wine was 17 months in 220L old French oak barriques. This really allows the incredible fruit character of the wine to shine through; combining intensely floral aromatics with deep red/black fruit flavours and rich velvety tannins.
