Paramos de Nicasia Tinta Del Pais/Garnacha 2014

Maquina & Tabla
Paramos de Nicasia Tinta Del Pais/Garnacha

We love this because...

Maquina Y Tabla's Toro manages to brilliantly tread the fine line of both offering the richness and power expected of the region whilst retaining elegance as well - it's a big wine but light on its feet.

The wine

Toro is a DO located downstream on the Duero river from the better-known Ribera del Duero region but it has rapidly been gaining recognition over the last few years. Plantings here are a local variant of Tempranillo known as Tinta del Toro and there are plenty of interesting old vineyards. The site for this wine is one such vineyard - located at Bardales on the south bank of the Duero with heavy gravel soils and planted out with 80-year-old vines on their own roots (ungrafted). Whilst the landscape here is quite flat the altitude is still quite significant at 700m. This cuvee is (also) named for the owner of the site and means 'Nicasia's Plains'.

A similar winemaking methodology is applied here as with the other reds, destemming and long slow ferment using natural yeasts and no additives. The finished wine is aged for 12 months in concrete and old oak to build and soften the texture. The standout feature of this wine is the capacity to balance the ripe, full fruit typical of Toro with a structure that still feels refreshing and elegant. A brilliantly individual interpretation of the region.
