Rioja La Condenada 2014

Bodegas Y Vinedos Artuke
Rioja La Condenada

We love this because...

Meaning ‘The Condemned’ La Condenada is a plot Artuke bought in 2012 and which prior to that had been abandoned despite the vines being more than 100 years old. The wine here is very lifted and elegant with more red fruit notes and fine but plentiful tannins and does justice to this incredible vineyard.

The wine

Artuke bought this site in 2012 and spent more than a year getting back into a farmable state prior to making their first wine in the 2013 harvest. The vineyard here is co-planted with a real mix of varieties comprising Tempranillo, Graciano, Garnacha and some Cagazal and the plantings date back over 100 years. The soils here are sand and gravel topsoil but with large pieces of sandstone and a hard sandstone subsoil; this again forces the vines to be naturally deep-rooting in order to source the nutrients they need.

The grapes are harvested and processed as a field blend, giving the wine a truly unique character; in the winery traditional destemmed fermentation is used for this plot with a long gentle ferment coupled with punchdowns helping to build structure in the wine. After pressing the wine is then sent to age in a combination of barrels of different sizes of French oak, again with the aim of preserving the purity of the fruit.
