Vrede Pinot Noir 2015

Storm Wines
Vrede Pinot Noir

We love this because...

The Vrede is the richest and most opulent of the Storm Pinot Noirs with a core of concentrated black cherry and red plum fruit with hints of spice, coffee and smoke. After being poured it will open up beautifully in the glass to reveal incredible depth and subtly of flavour.

The wine

The Vrede is one of the original wines in the Storm portfolio, in fact it was the discovery of this vineyard and his desire to make wines from such a special site that propelled Hannes on his journey to establishing his own winery. The vineyard is located within the core of the Hemel-en-Aarde valley and is a steep north-eastern facing planting on a stony/clay soils of Bokkeveld Shale. 2015 was a textbook vintage with harvest coming a full two weeks earlier than normal and producing tight compact bunches with small berries and great concentration.

Production here follows the typical Storm template by starting with fermentation via natural yeasts and a gentle maceration to help build the structure of the wine. Once fermentation is completed the wine is basket pressed and then sent to age in a mix of 1st, 2nd & 3rd fill barrels with the Vrede seeing a touch more new oak than its siblings. After maturing in barrel for 11 months the wine is bottled, unfined and unfiltered and then aged for a further 14 months before release ensuring it hits the market ready to get stuck into.
