Vrede Chardonnay 2016

Storm Wines
Vrede Chardonnay

We love this because...

Precise, intense and delicious – the Storm is a great example of exactly how we like our Chardonnay. Great acidity and bright citrus and green apple fruit are wrapped in well managed and integrated oak for a delicious finished wine that will give other top Chardonnay a run for its money.

The wine

One of Hannes' two new additions to his line up in 2015 the Vrede Chardonnay is a fantastic example of just how well South Africa can make this variety. It all stems from a vineyard in the main section of the Hemel en Aarde valley, north-east facing with stony, Bokkeveld shale soils that force the vines to work hard and create naturally low yields at harvest. 2016 was generally a hot year through the Cape Winelands but Hemel en Aarde benefitted from the cooling Atlantic influence to ensure that the bunches offered both concentration and great natural acidity with a yield of only 22hl/ha.

Hannes’ winery work is carefully and methodically hands off with a gentle basket pressing for the grapes followed by fermentation with native yeasts. Fermentation and aging is undertaking in oak with 20% new and the remainder in 3rd fill with 8 months aging prior to bottling in December 2016. The finished wine is an awesome blend of power and refinement with crisp citrus and pear alongside spice and smoke. This is serious offering that will age well for 5-10 years.
