Whilst we're often going on about how excited we are about the latest cool region, grape variety or production method here at Bottle Shock we've also got a real soft spot for classic winemaking styles. Whilst occasionally trends are more sizzle than steak in most cases classics are classics for a good reason - they are delicious.
As always our focus is on small producers making great wines; so here we've got the Bottle Shock take on six classic wine styles for you to try.
Cabernet Sauvignon Margarita Vineyard
This delivers everything you could want from a bottle of Cali Cab – bags of ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit; a full, rich body and sweet but firm tannins. A great example of what can be achieved from this ‘too cool’ vineyard.
This shows that behind all the glitz of the big name Chateaux Bordeaux can still do delicious, great value wines. A blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec this wine has plently of rich, dark fruits alongside spicy, earthy notes. A real classic and drinking beautifully now.
St. Romain Rouge 'Combe Bazin'
Quintessential red Burgundy from the Buisson brother’s ‘Combe Bazin’ vineyard (organically farmed like all their land) – plenty of sappy red fruit flavours, elegant tannins, fresh acidity all framed beautifully by judicious oak. Would be perfect with classic regional dishes like Coq au Vin or Boeuf Bourguignon.
It shows just how good Muscadet can be and how well it can age - lots of concentrated lemon and green apple fruit combine with richness from the long lees aging - great with seafood.
Sancerre Blanc "Ovide"
This is from a spectacular 60 year old vineyard on gravelly Cailottes soils – all of which combine to produce a wine of real depth and intensity. Absolutely bursting with zesty citrus and herbaceous notes it’s delicious now but has the concentration to age really beautifully for a few years.
This Blanc des Noirs (100% Pinot Noir) is the perfect introduction to the Dosnon style combining bright fruit and a fine mousse alongside smoky notes from the barrel aging and a biscuity finish from the time in bottle – really complex and delicious
